I have traveled on a lot of highways in my years of going to bicycle races. I always thought that the interstate system (as well as some local/state roads that I'm familiar with) could have been planned better, especially given today's blowback to the majority of road construction in today's society.

This site is my personal opinions on how the highways should be signed, what the exit signs and numbers should look like, where they should go (and not go), and my personal conventions that I would follow. This is totally unofficial and none of this should be taken as word of law; but I see this as a canvas, just as an artist would paint a picture. Who knows, maybe by some miracle some of this might become actuality; but for now this is my take.

Conventions

I strictly follow these current conventions:

  • East-West interstate highways are even numbers
  • North-South interstate highways are odd numbers
  • Even-numbered branch routes for loops
  • Odd-numbered branch routes for spurs

Here's what I'm changing:

  • If a spur connects to another branch or main route, the branch route will remain odd-numbered
  • US highways are replaced by state highways (using same number if possible)
  • Some state highways have new signs (old-fashioned signs are boring)
  • All highways will have exit numbers based on mileage
  • Branch route will maintain mileage and exit numbers even when crossing state lines.
  • County roads that are unmarked are shown here.
